The University District Youth Center (UDYC) works to address youth homelessness by providing a comprehensive system of services that recognizes and leverages youth strengths and voice while supporting youth to find resources, building their self efficacy and life skills, and obtain stable housing. Each year, UDYC works to secure stable housing for over 90 youths, increase the income of over 50 youths, and see at least 70% of clients remain permanently in secured housing six months after program completion.
In 2015, UDYC served over 600 youths ranging in age from 13-22, in King County.
UDYC operates out of an old house that was in need of extensive repairs and upgrades. The CfC:local committee, for this project, was made up of a group of extraordinary volunteers who committed themselves and their networks to ensure we succeeded in making these repairs and upgrades a reality for the clients and staff at UDYC. Seven Local Companies stepped up to partner with Construction for Change to provide renovation, including; Howard S, Wright, SMACNA, Western Washington, Lydig Construction, Constructive Element, Custom Interiors, MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions, and Skis Painting.
The completed renovations include: new flooring, a new kitchen, electrical work, painting, and plumping. They also received a new plasma screen TV. The renovations will allow the staff at UDYC to more effectively serve their clients, providing homeless youth with a safe place to go during the day and helping them on the path to leading full and productive lives.
