Pavilion for Action in Africa

Bulenga, Uganda||2025

Need & Opportunity

Action in Africa (AIA) operates a vibrant community centre in Nakuwadde, Uganda, dedicated to supporting the social, personal, and economic development of children, youth, and adults through increased access to education and life-changing resources.

Over the past decade, participation in AIA’s programs has grown significantly, alongside an increase in staff. The existing facilities were no longer sufficient to meet the daily flow of program activities or to provide staff with the space required to work effectively. This highlighted the need for a larger, welcoming, and purpose-built structure that would accommodate AIA’s expanding programming and continue to offer a conducive environment for community engagement.

Solution & Value Add

Action in Africa partnered with Construction for Change as the Owner’s Representative to design and construct a new 84 sqm Pavilion that would enable AIA to expand its services and reach more community members. During pre-construction, CfC supported the project through design review, development of cost estimates, and selection of a qualified general contractor. Throughout construction, CfC carried out daily site inspections, quality monitoring, and budget and schedule control; ensuring the Pavilion was delivered to a high-quality standard while remaining cost-effective and aligned with AIA’s needs.

The new Pavilion will offer a safe, inclusive, and flexible space designed to host a wide range of activities, including:

  • Daily meetings for staff and program participants (2–30 people)
  • After-school programs, including homework support, reading, and art classes, serving an average of 200 children daily
  • Holiday programs, such as dance, music, and sports, engaging 50–100 children per day.
  • Medical outreach events, providing registration, testing, and consultations to over 100 community members
