In 2013, we partnered with the U.S Marine Raiders Association to build the McMahon Secondary School on the island of Tulaghi, a two-hour ferry ride from Honiara. Their mission is “to advance education, including scholarships for native born children in the Solomon Islands and others” and we are honored to have been a part of bringing that mission to life in Tulaghi. Construction for the school building was finished in August 2014 and is CfC’s tenth completed project to date.
The school building houses the secondary school which has 200 students enrolled (the primary school also has 200 students). The building’s two stories consist of a library, computer lab, and four classrooms (each named after the commander of the four Raider battalions). There is also covered open space that serves as an outdoor school auditorium (this will be enclosed later for more classroom space). Rain gutters were added so that school officials could install a water tank to collect rain water for school usage. The building was constructed of prefabricated steel with suspended timber flooring to ensure the structure will not be subject to damage due to termites, heavy rains and other issues. The structure is solid. We are proud to say the building will stand strong for the next 50 years.
