Flying Kites Technology Centre

Need & Opportunity

In 2020, the Flying Kites Organization conducted a survey of public schools, and digital literacy emerged as the most significant need teachers identified. Nyandarua county, being a rural area, the schools in the area are under-resourced; lacking access to the internet, digital equipment, and resources. Flying Kites decided to address this need by developing an ICT training program for the teachers in their network schools.

Previously, Flying Kites trained 20 teachers per session. Still, in line with their expansion program, they saw it fit to come up with a permanent facility, a technology center where more teachers could be trained, and with easier access to the facility. This was achieved by renovating the Flying Kites School basement, performing fit-out works, furnishing it, and equipping it with technological equipment. As the client’s representative for this project, Construction For Change was involved in sourcing for the Consultants and the Contractor. They also managed the project during the active construction phase and ensured that the works were executed as per the drawings, delivering the project within the specified quality, budget and time.

Solution & Value Add

This new technology center tripled Flying Kite’s capacity, increasing the number of teachers trained from 20 to 60 per session. The program started in 2021 and has currently trained 250 teachers across nine schools. They are looking to expand to 10 more schools in the following year and train 300 more teachers, which is in line with their expansion program to reach all the 47 public schools in South Kinangop by 2028. The technology centre has also enabled the open house program where the teachers can come to the Center, 2 days a week at their own free will to practice on what they were trained on, access the internet and do their own research and access the E-library.

The Center now functions as a technology training hub for the teachers who extend the same training to the learners in the schools. This has up-scaled access to technology training and resources and is the first-ever, and currently the only, technology center in the subcounty designated for Educators.
